There was a time on this blog when I used to rush home after movies and write about how amazing or awful they were. I don’t know why I don’t do that as much anymore. Maybe I’m not as passionate?
Well, after seeing Whip It, I knew I had to come home and let everyone know how awesome it was!
Whip It is probably one of the best movies of the year, in my opinion. It’s definitely not a movie for everyone, and I can see a lot of people commenting on here in the future about how they thought it was the stupidest movie they’ve ever seen. But, trust me, it’s definitely worth at least trying out.
Whip It stars Ellen Page, who you may remember from the movie Juno. However, I remember her as Kitty Pryde from X-Men: The Last Stand. The story focuses on female empowerment and the concept of women making choices for themselves, not what anyone else wants them to do. Specifically, Ellen Page’s character (Bliss) struggling to balance two lifestyles: one that her heart tells her to love (roller derby) and the other being the one her mother wants her to love (beauty pageants).
Being a feminist, and very interested in women in film (I’m currently taking a Women In Film course), I would highly recommend this movie to anyone. It’s a light-hearted comedy with a story that drives the action the entire time. It’s directed by Drew Barrymore, who from what I can see, did a fantastic job! Not to mention, the music and sound track are probably worth the price of admission alone.
Don’t wait for this to come out on DVD! It’s a great movie!
