That’s me in the front row with a purple sweatshirt on! I made it on to the Colbert Report!
So, for those of you who don’t know (how could you not, I’ve been posting it all over the place), I am in New York City for Spring Break with C’Anna, her aunt, and cousin. So, far I’ve had a lot of fun. My good friend Mark got me and C’Anna VIP tickets to the Colbert Report taping for Wednesday, March 18! I didn’t get much sleep the night before so I was kind of tired getting there. After signing in and being held in a tiny holding room with 100+ people for over an hour, they finally let us in. Because we had to wait so long, everyone in the studio audience (including me and C’Anna) got Wriststrong bracelets! I gave mine to C’Anna’s little cousin Zach because he is a huge Colbert fan but couldn’t get in to the studio because he’s not 18 yet.
Once we got in to the set, it was pure energy! Everyone was so pumped, and the music was blasting. We ended up getting seats right in the front row (as you can see above). As is the case with most television show sets, the Colbert Report set is SOOOO small! So so so so small! The cameras definitely make it lok a lot larger than it is. My favorite part that not many people can see on the show, is a huge sign behind Stephen’s right shoulder when he’s sitting that reads, “McCain ’08 The Luck Stops Here” HAHAHA! Hilarious!
After everyone got settled in, the show had a pre-show comedian come in and warm everyone up to laugh. I haven’t been able to find out his name but as soon as I do, I will update the post. He came out and was making ethnic jokes, gay jokes, recession/economy jokes. He has the whole audience laughing, right? Then he comes over to me, and says, “Isn’t that right PURPLE SWEATSHIRT GUY!?” and everyone is laughing. I’m thinking, “Oh, God…here we go!” Then he comes up to me and takes a look at what I was wearing, and screams, “WORST OUTFIT EVER!!” Again, everyone is roaring. He then invites me to get up and walk across the set so everyone can take a look at what I was wearing. I got up, walked up, said, “You like it…” to him, and sat back down. He then says, “No, I really don’t, you look like a villain.” I guess since I was wearing a green t-shirt with a purple sweatshirt he associated me with the Joker. HAHA! It was a fun time, and definitely something I’ll always laugh about with C’Anna.
Finally, it was time for Stephen to come out. The lights changed, and the set lit up, and Stephen came running out from backstage. He then ran up around his desk, and then down the front row, to which C’Anna and I put out our hands and got a slap!
After the show started, it was non-stop laughter. I’m sure being there made me a little more giddy about his material, but it was actually a very funny show. We got to see one blooper to which Stephen laughed his ass off. I was really surprised at how they film the show. There was only one pause, when Stephen had the blooper, but the rest of the show is taped continuously the way that it is shown on television…including the animations, graphics, intros and outros. The editor of this show definitely has his or her work cut out for himself.
Finally, the taping ended and Stephen thanked everyone for having so much energy that night and talked about how annoying some of the other shows had been “sucky” due to their lack of energy and said we’re welcome back there “any time.”
We made it back to the hotel room to find that we have every single channel on television in the room except Comedy Central. So I spent all morning trying to get a wireless signal good enough to stream last night’s episode. Finally, my friend Sergio uploaded a screen shot of me and C’Anna in the audience clapping, and put it on Facebook! Then my wireless started working so I got to see it too.
All in all, the Colbert Report was an awesome experience and I had such a fun time! If you’d like to check it out, I am only on the screen for literally less than a second right after the eagle screams and they pan to the audience. Here is the link!
We still have 2 more days here. Today, I was feeling kind of nauseous when we got up so I stayed in the hotel room. Tomorrow, we plan on having lunch in Central Park and then getting to the Met to check out some Picasso! I’m really excited about the Met. If you have any suggestions about what pieces to see, please let me know, I’m very interested.
Loving New York City! Hope all of you WVU students and everyone else who is on Spring Break are having an awesome week!
