Last Friday I went with Amanda to Pittsburgh to see Hanson!

Amanda is and has always been a HUGE fan! As you can tell from the video she had an absolute blast and even said it was “one of the best nights” of her life! I’m glad I got to get some video footage of her thoughts and reactions! I had so much fun and Hanson is SO talented! I wasn’t a huge fan but after seeing them live I am really really impressed.

Anyway check out the video!

So last night was my third time seeing Ingrid and the band. Each time has been in Pittsburgh, the last 3 years. And each time she and her crew of eccentric personalities make the hour drive to Pittsburgh more than worth it!

This show was actually at Mr. Small’s Theatre in Millvale, PA, which is just over the river from downtown Pittsburgh. I managed to get lost 3 times getting there, but I eventually found it. I walked up the steps to the queue of people and told the man waiting that I was on the guest list (somewhat profoundly, because after all, how many times does someone get to be on a guest list for a rock group!?). He radioed in my last name as I waited impatiently to get inside and get a drink. The woman radios back, and she says, “Thrasher…that’s a negative.”

I am standing there paralyzed in shock. “What do you mean? I’m definitely on the list. I was put on there by Brian Vinikoor.” I thought name-dropping would boost my chances, or at the very least cause people standing in line watching this unfold to wonder who the hell I was. But that was all shot to hell when the guy checking tickets said, “I’ve never heard that name before in my life.”

The line to get in to the venue of die-hard Ingrid fans. Pouring rain/ice.

So, after a few e-mails from my phone, calling multiple people inside, outside, and in Los Angeles, they finally found the guest list that my name was on and put an admission bracelet on my wrist. So, I stood in the line of people waiting to get in, and surely enough it starts pouring down rain. Then the rain turned to ice. I was standing there getting soaking wet for a good 25-30 minutes! However, by the end of the night, I have to say: it was all worth it.

I don’t want to go on and on about Greg Laswell, but he was definitely a very nice surprise. I hadn’t had a chance to research him before the show because I have been so busy, but was very impressed with his voice and songwriting. I’ll probably end up being a fan eventually.

Ingrid and the band, as expected, performed beautifully and to the audience’s liking the entire night. Tonight’s show was the last stop of their North American tour, and their 47th show in 2 months. Allie Moss, Ingrid’s guitarist and usual back up vocalist, had lost her voice, but still smiled, laughed, and even sang some parts. What a trooper! You would never know they were tired, or sick of what they were doing because the energy was consistent the entire show, even with Allie Moss as a mute.

The crowd forming hearts during Ingrid Michaelson's song, "The Hat" at Mr. Small's Theater, Pittsburgh, PA, 11.5.09

One thing that I picked up on early in the performance was Ingrid’s voice. Given the last time she performed in Pittsburgh she was sick, I have to say that her tone and timbre of her voice was a lot richer and developed than I ever remember it. This was particularly noticeable in the second song of the night, “Die Alone.” I’m not a professional by any means, but as a constant Ingrid YouTuber, and follower, it was something that caught my…ears.

Her set list also had some unique features. She played a new untitled song, which has made its way to YouTube thanks to me a die-hard fan. After the song, she asked what it should be named, to which a voice behind me gave a suggestion. I guess we’ll wait and see if it makes the next album, and if she took his advice. Here’s the YouTube video of the new song:

Immediately following that song, she introduced another new song: a duet with Greg Laswell. This song is also untitled, unrecorded and unpublished. It was a very ‘happy in-love type of song’ and if I didn’t know any better, I’d say that maybe Greg and Ingrid are in to each other? A friend I was with noticed that they both had wedding rings on, so who knows? It will be interesting if we find this out for sure somewhere down the road.

After the show was finished, Ingrid did 2 encores, including a Mexican-food themed version of her current single “Maybe,” which the audience ate up absolutely loved.

Overall, the show was a huge success, and Ingrid and her band’s musicianship made for what many would call an entertaining, fun, and enjoyable evening.

I have to say thank you first to Brian Vinikoor for making the arrangements for me to see the show. I really really appreciate it, and I’m not sure there’s anyone who could appreciate these efforts more than I. Also, thank you to the merchandise manager, Lauren Glucksman, for being so helpful with the misunderstanding with the guest list, saving my ass from the rain, and for being so fun after the show!

dsc03750Just got back from the Britney Spears concert in Pittsburgh! It was an absolute blast! C’Anna, her friend Kendra, and Kendra’s boyfriend and I went together.

I have to say that I definitely did have a great time and it was a great show, but it wasn’t earth-shatteringly amazing by any stretch. In 2007 I saw Christina Aguilera’s Back to Basics tour, and since then nothing has really stacked up. The Pussycat Dolls opened for Christina in 2007 and opened tonight for Britney and they were definitely a ton better this time than they were in 2007. I think they had 6 members back then too, but I don’t remember.

Before we headed in to the show C’Anna used the wig (that she bought me for my birthday last year) and was wearing it through the arena. She saw this guy standing around with his wig, and screamed “Excuse me!” and gestured to her head. Obviously I needed to take a picture of it. dsc03732

Britney sounded looked really good. She didn’t sing live, and the entire show was done to a vocal track, which I knew going in. I mean if the Spice Girls can sing live, I think Britney Spears can, right? The show had a lot of cool things, such as the sideshows. They had different acts come out and entertain the crowd for a few moments between songs and costume changes. The most amazing one of the night was this girl who was being catapulted in to the air by two guys and a beam. I took video of it which you can see below.

A really cool part of the show was during an interlude when the monitors came down to stage level and a video of Britney in a very sexual orgy-esque room singing to “Sweet Dreams” (…are made of these), came on. It went from club dancing Britney Spears to grunge rock Britney Spears and the entire crowd went crazy for it!

Though the concert as a whole was very sensory overload and exciting, I can’t say that Britney herself was anything amazing. I mean how hard is it to walk and dance around on stage without singing? I guess I’ll never know. All in all, Britney’s still my girl though.

Here’s the crazy video of that girl flipping around on the balance beam. Watch all the way through because she just keeps doing more and more crazy stuff!

dsc03372So if you frequent my website at all, you should know by now that I am a huge fan of Ingrid Michaelson. So, long story long short: I signed up to win tickets through her Street Team on Ingridmichaelson.com The first person to sign up for the Street Team in each of the cities in which she was performing would get a pair of free tickets. However, in exchange for the free tickets, I had to do promotion of the tour, document it, and then send it to Street Team website so I could get my name on the will-call. Well, I WON THE TICKETS! So, that is why I had all this Ingrid Michaelson stuff all over my website, MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter. You get the idea.

Naturally, I offered the other ticket to Brittney. I got back from Canada Sunday night. Passed out in my bed nearly the moment I walked in. Then, Brittney was at my apartment at 12:30PM on Monday. We got lunch with C’Anna, and then headed to Pittsburgh to beat the nasty weather (which we didn’t beat). We had just enough time to run in to South Hills Village so I could get a new iPhone 3G dock, grab a coffee at Starbucks, and get in to the venue at Club Cafe.

Needless to say, I had a freaking blast. The 2 opening acts were amazing! David Ford and Newton Faulkner. Both are brilliant musicians. I was literally a foot in front of the stage, which was at eye level. twitteringWhat made it so fun was that I was tweeting on Twitter about being there, and decided I would send Ingrid a good luck message as we were waiting for her to come out, just to see if she would reply. She has replied to me and Brittney quite a few times via Twitter. So I sent it, and she totally wrote back! Over on the right you can see the couple of messages that I sent to her and then her response in the purple box. I apparently had really bad reception because it ended up sending 3 times. Way to go John. It was surreal to be interacting with her right before she got on stage.

So the show was absolutely amazing, and I had such a great time seeing her again. After the show, Brittney and I were kind of hungry so we decided to drive down a few blocks to Tom’s Diner. It’s a pretty popular place to go for food at all hours of the night on Carson Street in Pittsburgh. We went in, sat down, and ordered. My back was to the window, and Brittney kept psyching me out telling me that Ingrid was right behind me about to walk in. Something was telling me she might. Well, as it turns out, who should walk in, but the entire band, minus Ingrid. Yep, that includes Allie Moss!! For those of you who are fans of Idsc03367ngrid, I am sure you know who Allie is. She walked in, looked at me, and smiled. I smiled back and did a weird, “Helloooo,” to which their manager just looked at me like, “Who the hell are you?” I tweeted to Allie and she replied as well.

I had such a great time, and it was fun to be sitting around Tom’s Diner with no one else but Ingrid Michaelson’s entire band. I hope she gets some rest, and starts work on her new album. We need brand spankin new stuff! Huge thanks to the Ingrid Michaelson street team for hooking me up with free tickets. I was so excited, and the tickets couldn’t have gone to anyone more deserving, I promise!
