Introducing: The Christmas Lights!

Man these challenges just keep getting more fun! We’re already on to challenge 3 for the MTV TJ contest, and I am so excited about it.

MTV has asked the TJ candidates to break and expose a local band. Here’s what the challenge says exactly:

Social: Expose and break a local band of your choice using any media channels available to you. Examples include blogs, the web, newspapers, magazines, video, television, radio, and more. At the end of the challenge, ZYNC from American Express will spotlight your band and their music at Miami Fashion Week!

I can’t be more excited to announce that the band I am breaking to the MTV world is The Christmas Lights! These guys are from my hometown of Cumberland, Maryland and brimmmmming with talent! How are they not topping the charts yet!? But don’t take my word for it: they are featured on Alternative Press’ front page as Band of the Week right now!

Check out this great montage of their recent spring tour:

These guys already have 2 full-length albums out, and available on iTunes: Walk Like a Human (2008) and Ghost Twins (2009).

Their official website is ChristmasLightsMusic.com, but being attuned to social media, are more active and updated with their Music MySpace page: MySpace.com/TheChristmasLights.

They have a few official music videos out as well, such as this stop-animation feature which will really get you thinking:

I’m going to be filling you in on a lot more about The Christmas Lights over the next couple of days, so check them out and let me know what you think!

They’re saying they are going to post the full interview on their website, but I haven’t seen it yet. As soon as I do, I’ll post it. One question each was a bit of a rip off!

Anyway here it is!

A Great Republican Letter to the Editor from Cumberland Maryland May 19, 2010

Someone from my home town of Cumberland, Maryland published the following Letter to the Editor that ran in our local newspaper.

Thoughts?

To the Editor:Cumberland Times-News

To the Editor:

When is the sleeping giant going to fully wake up? How much longer is America going to allow this impersonator in the White House to lead their country down this path?

During the campaign you stated that you would transform America. Why? What are the faults with America? America is the greatest country in the world.

This great nation has afforded many people to grow and become successive in their lives. Just think, if not for America and the people who made her a great country, you would not be sitting in the White House.

You were the youngest senator who served the least amount of time in the Senate, and not a very remarkable one.

All during your campaign and even today you surrounded yourself with, just as you are basically unqualified for the positions which they now hold.

Also, just like you, Mr. President, they bear no allegiance, respect or affection for America, for her traditions and what she stands for.

When you and your select group, Nancy, Harry and the rest of cronies want to pass something such as the health care bill, cap and trade etc, you treat us as un-American, racist or out of touch with what America’s needs.

We don’t need the government  controlling our money, we, the people have done and continue to do a much better job with our finances.

Just look at the mess you have gotten us into. Please explain the massive debt you and your cronies brought upon the American people.

Why would you want to change the true meaning of September 11, 2001?

This is and should remain a day of Remembrance for all of America and the world for that matter. This is a day of infamy just as Pearl Harbor. It is not a “National Service Day”.

You have claimed you and your family are Christians, however neither you nor you family will join or attend a church. You claim it would be too disruptive. It’s your ego, that is the problem.

Even in your book in your own words “I will stand with the Muslims.” I for one see this as self explanatory. President Obama also states he gets daily inspirational messages from Mr. Jim Wallis, who has spent his career promoting the Left’s New Social Gospel to evangelicals.

Mr. President you’re not the chosen one, nor are you bigger than Jesus Christ. It is just your arrogance and your dislike for America that you are promoting.

Come 2012 I pray you, your arrogance, and your cronies will be sent packing. I know I never voted for you in 2008 and I will never vote for you.

God bless America.

dsc03653Heck yes! This weekend was definitely one of the best birthdays I have ever had. I think the main reason was because my birthday fell on a Saturday (the 24th) this year. Previous birthdays (including my 21st) included going to class, working, or going to bed early because I had a 9am class. That’s not a fun way to celebrate.

Friday night, C’Anna and her mom took me to this DELICIOUS restaurant in Bridgeport, West Virginia called Prevence Market. It was sooooo good! I got crab cake and vegetables. They each got me a few gifts including David Archuleta’s autograph and homemade chocolates!!! Do these people know me well or what!?

Saturday, the day of my birthday, I came home to Cumberland. I went to dinner with Lyndsay, Danny, Jackie, Brittney, Kim, and Kristin at City Lights in downtown Cumberland. I hadn’t eaten there in a while but it was yummmmy! Danny got me Power Rangers windows stickers, a new shirt, and a new hat! Jackie got me hand sanitizers (long story!), and Brittney got me balloons and a card! After dinner, we met up with Johnny and Rachel and went bowling at White Oaks. I thought that we would be able to bowl at 9:30, but it didn’t start until closer to 11. So, I spent an hour and a half and about $10 in quarters trying to win something in the damn claw machine. Johnny spent 1 quarter and won a bee stuffed animal and gave it to me! Yes!! Then, I used Lyndsay’s quarter and got myself that awesome Happy Birthday bear you see in the picture above! What an awesome gift to get! I was so excited! Rachel also met up with us after she got off work and got me an Augusten Burroughs book. I can’t wait to read it!

dsc03672Sunday, I spent time with my family…who by default, don’t know when the camera is going to flash! But, I love them still the same. They had a birthday cake ready for me when I walked in on Sunday. My cousin Aurora was there which definitely made my birthday. She was so excited that it was my birthday so I asked her to help me blow my candles out. She happily obliged.

If you wrote me a message via Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, text messages, or called, thank you so much! I really mean it. I read every single message and I am so lucky to have such amazing people surrounding me on my birthday. I couldn’t have been happier this weekend!

dsc03585 After a brief hiatus from my website, I am back and ready to start at it again. I shouldn’t have left you (left you) without a dope beat to step to (step to).

I hope everyone had an awesome New Year’s Eve. I spent it with a couple of friends in a very intimate, low key setting – at least compared to last year. I went to Danny’s for a few drinks of champagne, then headed to downtown Cumberland. We went to Red’s first, which is a new up-scale bar. They had free food and all the girls got roses! I ended up seeing some old friends there and it was awesome! At 11:30, everyone wanted to leave, so we went to Baltimore Street Grill, but it was too packed for me, so I just got a tall mocha next door at the coffee shop.

The ball dropped in downtown Cumberland, albeit without an official countdown. *sigh I know I will get tons of hate mail about this, and about how I just need to respect the fact that the ball even dropped and that I am alive in 2009, but it’s like…what is the point of going to see a ball drop if there isn’t an official countdown? Literally, about 1,000 people watched the ball come down and light up 2009, but no one was together counting down 10…9…8. Suddenly, without notice it was 2009, and I was annoyed. Let’s fix this for next year.

dsc03586After the anticlimactic and disappointing ball drop, we made our way towards Ed’s Canal Pub. On the way we saw a load of stoners, and another group of gothic people doing the Macarena. Hmmm. Anyway, by the time we got to Ed’s, we ran in to even more people that we know. First, we ran in to Bethany. As soon as I saw her I knew I needed a picture with her. She was killing it in every single way that night. I don’t know anyone that can stay on top of her game the way she does. Constantly looking flawless, always smiling, and never seems fake. We need more of this in the world.

So my holiday season has come to an end. Sort of. My birthday is the 24th, and for those of you that don’t know, I celebrate it 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after the actual date. You can call it Johnukah. It’s a festival of presents, where you give me a present each day 2 weeks before and after my birthday. It’s going to be sick. Stay tuned to johnthrasher.net for more info. :)

picture-71Can someone tell me why the hell mother nature is unleashing her fury on my part of the country. I can’t even see Maryland on the damn map becuase it’s being taken over by an apocalypse.

Hey God…STOP IT.

I am so sick of waking up every single day and it is either raining, sleeting, dreary, or miserable looking outside. I swear it has been like this for the last 2 months. There have been maybe 2 nice days. Of course those nice days are like 70 degree days too.

It’s starting to feel like that trailer for “2012″ here. Ugh.

No, I didn’t write Haroun and the Sea of Stories. I wrote a blog asking for bandaids to get Photoshopped out of a picture and suddenly I’m the anti-Christ.

Woke up this morning to a couple e-mails from people hating me because of the post below about a photo. Apparently, I hate Cumberland and everything it is trying to do culturally. Couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Okay, so calling someone an artsy-farty photographer and insinuating that his work focuses on pictures of dirt was a bit much, I agree. However, it was all in whimsical fashion (and to be fair I never thought anyone would really even read my post). I do apologize to anyone that thought my comments were offensive. It seemed a lot more insulting and “attacking” when I posted it than when I thought of it. I hope that people realize when they make comments like, “stop critiquing and just appreciate” that I am a) definitely appreciating the piece, otherwise I wouldn’t have written “It looks fantastic,” and b) I am allowed to do both. Whether it was meant to be set on someone’s coffee table or published in Time Magazine, I am allowed to criticize (positively or negatively) anything that I want. I’m not “putting my country first” on my little ‘ol website that clearly no one reads…right?

I don’t mind the negative comments! I think this conversation about the photo is doing a great job in promoting Cumberland Goes to War, if anything. I can handle it if you don’t agree with what I have to say! I’m an easy guy to get along with.

Okay, I’m going to go tell people what do to do now and then go in to exile and never show my face in Cumberland, EVER AGAIN! :P
