After much thought and consideration, I now present to you the top 10 albums of 2009, as chosen by me. Stay tuned, because I’ll also be posting my Top Tracks of 2009, and my Top Albums of the Decade in the days ahead!
10. Mariah Carey – Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel
This album is NOT my favorite Mariah Carey album, but as a whole it ended up being my number 10 choice. I listened to a couple of the songs from the album A LOT this year, and really enjoyed them. I think this is very classic Mariah Carey, but still think some of her lyrics and dying whistle tones kept me from loving it.
9. David Archuleta – [self titled]
This album was released late last year, but it still was one of my favorites all the way through February and March. It has a lot of catchy songs, and I always find myself putting it in my car’s CD player ever now and then. I hope his next album is a little more riskier and less bubblegum tween pop.
8. Owl City – Ocean Eyes
I haven’t listened to Owl City in a few months, but I really liked this album when I first heard it. I jumped on the Owl City bandwagon about a month before they took off and dominated the Billboard charts. I was excited to find a new artist that I could tell other people about, but before I had a chance to think, “Fireflies” was No.1 on every chart. Great album and reminds me a lot of my fall semester.
7. Sam Sparro – [self titled]
A friend of mine did a dance routine to Sam Sparro last fall for his dance recital (to Black and Gold) and I thought it was a great song. I went and downloaded the album and realized it is a work of genius! Nearly every song is funky, danceable, catchy, and matched with great vocals from Sam Sparro. If you don’t have this album, you’re going to want to buy it…if anything for your party mix.
6. Alicia Keys – The Element of Freedom
This album has only been out for a little over a week, but it has been enough to really effect me on a variety of levels. It almost seems that she wrote this entire album with me in mind. I don’t think it’s as great as 2007′s As I Am, but then again it’s a completely different vibe. Either way, definitely check this one out, and really give it a couple of listens before you judge.
5. Lady Gaga – The Fame
This album was also released late last year. I had the leak when I was in Italy in June 2008, and didn’t listen to it much. However, once Poker Face was released as a single earlier this year, I immediately realized what kind of jewel I had in my iTunes library. I am now one of the biggest Gaga fans I know, and really love playing this album no matter what mood I am in: a sign of a true classic.
4. La Roux – [self titled]
It seems like every time I hear of a new artist or song, I get really in to them, and then a month later they blow up. Same thing happened for me with La Roux. This album is full of fun, techno beats that are sure to keep your feet moving.
3. Ingrid Michaelson – Everybody
Ingrid Michaelson could release an album reading the phonebook and I would think it was the greatest album of all time, and I admit that. However, her songwriting, and lyrics can not be denied. She is a true talent, and I have a very intimate connection with her music. I saw her tour this album in Pittsburgh this fall, and it was fantastic, as expected. Check this one out for sure!
2. Lady Gaga – The Fame Monster
Give this album a month more and it probably would have been my No.1 for 2009. I’ve played the hell out of this CD, even weeks before it was released, and I am still not over it. Every song is on another level of electro pop, which is an experience in itself. Hopefully I am seeing her on my birthday, in New York City!
1. Beyonce – I Am… Sasha Fierce
This album came out late November of 2008 as well, and for the last year has been one of my most played albums week in and week out. I NEVER get sick of this album, and that is a very rare feat for me. I usually end up falling in love with music for a couple of weeks and then not listening to it for a very long time (Janet’s “Discipline”, Danity Kane, etc.). Beyonce hits gold with me with everything that she releases, and this album was definitely the album of the year for me. It has a beautiful mix of dance tracks and ballads that all really seem to stick in your head.

Get ready to jingle your bells y’all!
David Archuleta’s Christmas album, “Christmas From the Heart” is about to be released on October 13! This is pretty early for a holiday album, but he has a new pop album coming out early next year, so I imagine they wanted to separate the two a bit!
I think the cover is kind of bizarre. He definitely still looks like he’s 10 years old (he’ll be 19 in December), but on his debut album cover they made him look like this buff 25 year old. He kind of looks like one of Santa’s elves on this cover.
I’m most excited for his rendition of “Ave Maria” and my personal favorite Christmas song, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”

Here is a tracklisting of the holiday songs that are going to be on the album! Can’t wait!
1. Joy to the World
2. Angels We Have Heard On High
3. O Come All Ye Faithful
4. Silent Night
5. The First Noel
6. O Holy Night
7. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas (with Charice Pempengco)
8. I’ll Be Home For Christmas
9. Pat-A-Pan
10. What Child Is This
11. Riu-Riu-Chiu
12. Ave Maria
13. Melodies of Christmas

My fascination with Dolly Parton began in 2005 when I took an Appalachian Fiction class here at WVU, with one of the best teachers I have ever had, Anna Elfenbein. We watched a documentary about Appalachian music and the culture that developed over the last couple hundred years here in the hills.
Dolly is a legend in so many ways. She really embodies the Appalchian culture and worked her way to the top. Her father couldn’t read or write, and did the best that he could for his kids at the time. She’s such an amazing story. She wrote this song in his honor, which I was first introduced to when David Archuleta sang it last year on American Idol. Both Dolly and David sing it with such conviction and passion. The lyrics and sincerity is just overwhelming at times.
Corny, I know but listen to it once and tell me it’s not one of the most beautiful songs you’ve ever heard!
Click here to download the full length song on iTunes which includes a 2 minute preview of why she dedicates this song to her Dad each time. It’s amazing.

Birthday Extravaganza! January 26, 2009

Heck yes! This weekend was definitely one of the best birthdays I have ever had. I think the main reason was because my birthday fell on a Saturday (the 24th) this year. Previous birthdays (including my 21st) included going to class, working, or going to bed early because I had a 9am class. That’s not a fun way to celebrate.
Friday night, C’Anna and her mom took me to this DELICIOUS restaurant in Bridgeport, West Virginia called Prevence Market. It was sooooo good! I got crab cake and vegetables. They each got me a few gifts including David Archuleta’s autograph and homemade chocolates!!! Do these people know me well or what!?
Saturday, the day of my birthday, I came home to Cumberland. I went to dinner with Lyndsay, Danny, Jackie, Brittney, Kim, and Kristin at City Lights in downtown Cumberland. I hadn’t eaten there in a while but it was yummmmy! Danny got me Power Rangers windows stickers, a new shirt, and a new hat! Jackie got me hand sanitizers (long story!), and Brittney got me balloons and a card! After dinner, we met up with Johnny and Rachel and went bowling at White Oaks. I thought that we would be able to bowl at 9:30, but it didn’t start until closer to 11. So, I spent an hour and a half and about $10 in quarters trying to win something in the damn claw machine. Johnny spent 1 quarter and won a bee stuffed animal and gave it to me! Yes!! Then, I used Lyndsay’s quarter and got myself that awesome Happy Birthday bear you see in the picture above! What an awesome gift to get! I was so excited! Rachel also met up with us after she got off work and got me an Augusten Burroughs book. I can’t wait to read it!
Sunday, I spent time with my family…who by default, don’t know when the camera is going to flash! But, I love them still the same. They had a birthday cake ready for me when I walked in on Sunday. My cousin Aurora was there which definitely made my birthday. She was so excited that it was my birthday so I asked her to help me blow my candles out. She happily obliged.
If you wrote me a message via Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, text messages, or called, thank you so much! I really mean it. I read every single message and I am so lucky to have such amazing people surrounding me on my birthday. I couldn’t have been happier this weekend!
American Idol: Big Surprises Coming! January 19, 2009

TVWeek.com caught up with Mike Darnell, an executive producer of American Idol, and found out that there are a lot of good things coming up for American Idol.
Apparently, there is a huge “controversial” surprise coming up when we get to the Top 12. Darnell says “People will be talking about it.”
Also, the contestants will be living in a house this year. I always thought that this would be better for everyone involved. Keeping all the contestants hanging out, moving to events, and having fun at the same time under one roof seems like a good idea.
Apparently, Kelly Clarkson will be showing up in a few weeks (who cares, I know). I’m sure American Reject David Cook will be showing his rusty vocals on the show, but probably not until closer to the end of the season.
